Another FOOL

Sat 06 Dec, 2014 8:17 pm

A man in his late 30s claiming to have been lost for three days has been found in Lerderderg State Park, north-west of Melbourne.

At around 1pm bushwalkers found the Greendale man dehydrated with suspected hypothermia.

The man told police he had arrived at the park without a phone, food or water on Wednesday and had been lost ever since.

He was taken by helicopter to the Alfred Hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Usually the headlines are "Bushwalker Lost"and Joe Public then thinks that all bushwalkers are like this. It just makes you wonder about the stupidity of some members of the human race.

That's a bit harsh. At least he got out alive.

You lot are pretty harsh! I haven't read anywhere that says he's a hiker/walker/whatever? Talk about jumping the gun with no info to go on...

Maybe this time. Also I forgot to mention that no one new he was missing. Some bushwalkers stumbled upon him yesterday and raised the alarm. Harsh maybe but there are people like this in our society who do not think. And at his age you would think he would at least let someone know where he was going.

Have any of you considered that he may have a mental illness?

When I first read this story, that's one of the first things I thought of. Unfortunately these type of threads run off into a, 'he had no gear, didn't tell anyone' angle.

He could have been a hiker, walker, mentally ill, seeing spiritual enlightenment, who knows? That's the thing, unless someone knows the full story, we're all just surmising or making things up.

I just realised though. I do a lot of day walks and have never told anyone where I'm going. Does anyone? I carry a PLB, so I guess that'll do. Then again, I shouldn't have mentioned it, as now it'll send the thread into 'you shouldn't rely on a PLB' territory.

There's probably something in that Strider given that
"The man told police he had arrived at the park without a phone, food or water on Wednesday and had been lost ever since".

It is no excuse but I think that society is so conditioned to condemn by the barage of negative news atricles on every subject. There is nothing simple everything is presented as extreme or dramatic. This poor guy probably has some serious stuff going on. The key being lost since arrival.

The media is out to spin the story in a negative way. Nasty stuff!

The first thing that came to mind when I read it was mental illness. I've been suicidal before and gone bush to plan some nasty stuff. Thankfully I got help and treatment and got through it.
I don't blame anyone for thinking this guy is an idiot though because most people aren't aware of the signs and symptoms of mental illness.

Luck some bushwalkers found him or it could have been a lot worse.
