It's farmland, its algae, its sediment.
And whatever else you can think of (maybe).
But if one wants to try and drink water from the Murray River, What would you use/do?

Not drink it is the only thing I can think of.
Although look up life straw....they are supposed to be able to drink from seriously contaminated stagnant puddles lat time I looked.

There are 3 things you need to contend with -
1- Bugs and chemicals
2 - Colour
3 - Taste
The only real important one is ONE. I have used an MSR miniworks to filter water out of a muddy puddle. The only trouble is you need to clean it more regularly but that is easy done and you can even do using the dirty water and a scouring pad. I have also taken water from a stagnant pond but it did not get the colour out (tea tree tannin). Taste of both were not exceptional but I (and all the others with me) did not get sick. Any pump type filter that takes you below 1 micron absolute will do the job and some have activated charcoal to help with the taste. I would make sure any unit is capable of removing chemicals.
