Overnight hikes from or near Bendigo

Wed 04 Jan, 2012 11:50 am

It seems I will be spending a week or so in Bendigo with some free time, and I thought I might take along some kit to do an overnighter or maybe two.

It will be the last week of January, so I guess it will be hot and dry. Not my favourite conditions.

Any suggestions?

If you can get to Blackwood (about 30min drive)the Lerderderg Gorge would be great to walk this time of the year as the river would be low and you could go deep into the Gorge. Heaps of tracks and many overnight possibilities, especially if you start at Obriens Crossing. I have a couple of walks in the Lerdy that I have put on my walking blog with heaps of detail and pics, Go to "thewaz19.blogspot.com
Heaps of walks through the Wombat State Forest also, not far from Bendigo.
Hope this helps

Thanks Wazza. That's a great blog you have going there.

I'll get some maps of the area and work out some logistics.

:-)

Ok I'm planning for Lerderderg via Blackwood......

Has anyone cycled the road from Woodend to Blackwood? It's only about 30km, but since I only currently have access to online maps, I'm not sure of the terrain.

Do you think my push bike would be safe locked up at Blackwood for 36 hours?

The box Iron bark forests in the heathcote - greytown national park not far from The army base are an interesting place to do an overnight hike.
