Hi all,

My better half and I were wanting to do the Major Mitchell plateau walk this coming cup weekend but (foolishly) didn't book the Jimmy creek campsite in advance...

The Halls Gap centre said that an alternative option would be to come in from the east side via the kalymna falls campsite?

We were hoping to do a 1-2 night overnight walk that included this but there seems to be a lack of detailed hiking maps available online and we won't have a chance to grab one of glenn tempests books or something similar.

Could anyone provide some information as to if there is some sort of way to access the plateau from the eastern side adn possibly camp at first wannon or something like that? Or are we kinda screwed?

Shouldn't be a problem.

Just walk up the road to the saddle, there's a track all the way.

Kalymna falls campsite to first wannon is a short walk.

I think it's actually more interesting coming from the east and a lot easier. If you can't camp at jimmy creek you can head east back off the plateau into mafeking and back to kalymna.
Won't be as busy as the other side on a long weekend

Thanks for the detailed reply icefest. Yeah I was hoping to avoid as much of the crowd as possible although that may be a futile exercise on cup weekend!

Agreed, that used to be a great loop, except for the road bash back to the car.

I think now they have moved the campground there is no intention to open the track officially again:(

Luckily enough off track walking is permitted in the grampians

Hey everyone,
I was thinking of riding from Ararat (delivered there by Vline) to Kalimna Falls which I think is around 50 km's. As it will likely be 2 hour ride and I would arrive until 4.30pm, was wondering how far the walk might be from Kalimna falls to First Wannon Remote camp? Whether this is a feasible plan at the end of the day.
The other query is how feasible a round trip using Bomjinna loop would be as an overnight. That is leaving either from Kalimna or First Wannon and returning back to bike at Kalimna Falls.
I guess the third question is am I being a bit crazy. I'm fairly fit and have done quite a bit of walking. Not in this area of the park though. My experiences of Mt Difficult certainly makes me respect how steep and exacting the walks can be around these parts when you are trying to squeeze too much in.

From kalymna to first wannon is an easy 2 hrs for me at a decent pace so a 4:30 start this time of year is no worries.
The loop to bomjinna would be perfect but consider it off track walking as due to recent events there will be no signage and may be overgrown.
