Bushwalking with kids

Postby Jane99 » Mon 24 Nov, 2014 12:40 pm

Hi, we just did our first overnight walk with the kids - walked from Baw Baw village to camp at the saddle below Mt St Phillack. Great experience for the kids, and we were happy to be out camping again. Wondering if anyone has suggestions of other 4-5km overnight circular walks we could do without alot of ascent, ie 4-5km one day, camp, then walk back the next day. The kids are 1yo & 4yo. Thanks. Jane

Hi Jane, we did that walk with kids last March. Lots of fun.

Another fun one with kids is to only do a snippet of the Beeripmo Trail as a return walk to Beeripmo campsite. Decide the length of the walk by where you park your car.

Bogong High Plains. Watchbed Creek track to Warby Corner, back via Heathy Spur. Or loop around to Cope Saddle from Pretty Valley. Or use the Aquaduct track and bits of the AAWT to do a loop past Fitzgerald hut. Lots of tracks up there you can connect.
Into Wonnongatta-Moroka, and there's the Conglomerate Falls/Bryce's Hut loop from the Bryce's campground. Or for an out-and-back there's Gantner's Hut (MacAllister Springs) from the Howitt carpark (there's a partial loop if you use the alternative track around the cliffs on Wonnongatta Spur) or into the Wellington Plains from MacFarlane Saddle.

You can also put together loops on Mt Stirling, but these mostly involve some walking on the roads/4wd tracks, which is less pleasant.

NNW, great suggestions. I've just added them to the list for our kids!

This has been a big year for the kids: multi-night bushwalks, first snowshoeing/snowcamping trip, first canoeing trip,... It's about time I get them to the High Plains.
