Road Condition? - Howitt Rd

Postby Dutch » Mon 07 Dec, 2015 8:20 am

Hey all!

Had a good search on here, cannot find a mention.

I'm planning a hike v.soon where i hoped to start from Mt Howitt Carpark.
To get there, i would be going Licola > Tamboritha Rd > Howitt Rd > "Mt Howitt Carpark"
I'll be in a 2WD station wagon. What is the road like, has anyone been up there recently? I have a lot of experience on dirt roads being a country kid though my current jalopy rides pretty low from the factory so if i cant put one wheel on the outside and the other in the middle, to avoid a rut, im in trouble.

Any feedback would be hugely appreciated!!

EDIT: 2015-12-07- Used same vehicle to get to Upper Howqua Campsite a month back, and it was a cake walk; just took time around grapefruit rocks and rode a wheel on each side of large ruts

Just got back from there yesterday.

You'll be fine in a 2wd. There are some significant pot holes at times but if you take it slowly they'll be easily avoided.

As to conditions on the track - still water flowing at Macallister Springs and Camp Creek. Water about 500m from Catherine Saddle (follow the old road south east). Very hard to find water at Viking Saddle (at least a 1 hour exercise) - unless we get some rain expect it to be dry very soon.

Well done to whoever repaired the vandalism to Valejo Gantner Hut (it looks fantastic).

Cheers,
John

Watch out for hoons in 4 WD Tonka toys. They fang it on that road at a speed that is dangerous.

Hot off the press .....

I was up at Mt Howitt - Mt Spec yesterday (Tue) and on the way out spoke to a DELWPI guy (or what ever their name is this week). He was marking out the road from the 1st gate to Howitt carpark - they are grading this week.

So, from next weekend, the Howitt road should be smooth as.

We are responsible for the health of the planet - not it for ours

drove up there 4 days ago a few holes mainly near Howitt Plains Hut. Generally found the road in good condition.'
