30peaksin30days - List of Peaks/Mountains/Hills/Knobs/Knolls

Postby South Col » Mon 02 May, 2016 12:47 pm

Here it is, lol my list. 30peaksin30days
You will notice I have two rankings, the first or left hand ranking, ranks the top 30 (I know I have 31) mountains or Massifs in Victoria. The second or right hand ranking, ranks the top 50 high points or subsidiary peaks.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not meant to be 100% accurate of the be all and end all of Victoria's Highest Peaks. If anyone has tried to compile a list like this and actually hike them all, they will learn it is not as easy task as it first seems to put all the high points in order. First many of the peaks have subsidiary peaks that are harder and bigger to get up than some of the mountains (EG West Bogong Peak took 2 hours return from Bogong summit while Mt Bundara took 5 mins from walking track). Plus in places like the Bogong High Plains, there are knolls, knobs, spurs and high points everywhere. Some have names, while others don't (EG Rocky Knobs, its highest knob was more of a hike up than Mt Jim or Hollands Point).
Also I know some of the heights might not be perfectly correct. I tried to resource all the heights from the SV maps but some points didn't have a height and had to be guessed or, I researched the height from other hikers GPS/Altimeter readings or from articles Like Wild - Peak Bagging.

My list grew originally from the Bonzle list online, but I soon realised this was quite inaccurate so I started searching online for similar lists. Wild Magazine #61 had an article in 1996 called "Victorian Peaks" by David Innes and he listed 22 points over 1800m. So I used some of his list as well. I also spent much time scouring over the SV maps of the Alpine NP and picking out and marking all the highest points. I noticed that there was approximately 30 peaks over 1700m so decided to go with them and try to reach the top of all of them within a month (hence the name) or before it got too close to winter lol. While completing many of the climbs/hikes my list grew as I scaled other high points along the way, which is why I have two rankings and ended up with a list of 50 high points over 1700m.
And YES I know there are others that I have missed (Eg Timms Spur and The Twins), but getting to every high point and then actually agreeing on what constitutes an actual high point becomes very subjective. Happy arguing/discussing this point lol (3 contour lines etc, Ive read them all). In the end I made the decision while I was out there hiking/climbing them, if I thought it was worth doing and adding to my list, then I would do them.

Please come check out my blog ... 30peaksin30days.wordpress.com ... I have all my trip reports and many photos of each of the climbs/hikes.

My final conclusion was this ... Wow we have a beautiful, amazing, incredibly diverse backyard, love it, protect it, look after it and get out and explore it.

OH CRAP!!! The list didn't come out like i entered it grrrrrr. Hope you can work it out. The number on the right hand side is the highest point ranking out of 50 and the number on the left is the highest mountain ranking out of 31.
I'll put the list on my blog 30peaksin30days.wordpress.com, hopefully it will show it more clearly.
