Bunyip State Park - Southern Circuit

Hi guys,

I led my first group hike over the weekend via Trail Hiking Australia. I took a group of 10 people on a 16km hike in the Bunyip State Park that I refer to as the southern circuit. It took us just under 4 hours to complete.

The trail we took started off at a popular spot in the park called Mortimer Picnic Ground. It’s almost a home base for campers and hikers who wish to take in the various trails of the area. We left the picnic ground just after 10am and headed south on the Yarra Bubba Track, turned left on the Sand Pit Ridge Road, turned left on Pooley Road, another left onto North Road momentarily, and right onto Avards Track.

After breaking for lunch at the intersection of Avards Track and Lupton Track, we turned right for a short time and then took a left onto Guide Track, a right onto Camp Road and then turned left onto Gembrook-Tonimbruk Road where we headed back to the picnic ground.

Had a great time leading my first hike and on a day that was particularly good to us weather-wise.

Hi

I have never done any hiking before but have decided to give it a go with a friend. At some stage I would like to do overnight trips but though that it would be smart to stick to shorter day hikes to begin with. I was looking at doing my first hike in a few weeks at Bunyip but had not worked out exactly how far or what tracks to follow when I stumbled across this post. Thanks for the information. I think I will follow this as my first hike.

Do you think that the track will be easy enough for a beginner to get around without getting lost?

Mudflap, welcome to the forum. I don't know the walk, and hopefully others will advise. You will need basic gear, notably a a pack, a waterproof top, clothing for cold weather, water, and suitable footwear, which can be runners. Food and water are useful. A change of clothing at the car is advised. There's plenty of advice in other parts of the forum, or you can start a thread of your own.

Hi Mudflap,

Welcome to the forum. As Lophophaps as mentioned there are many sub-forums on this site that will be able to help you with gear and what not. With regards to how easy the track is, I would say you'd be able to get around it just fine as a beginner hiker. There are some uphill and downhill sections, but the majority of the trail is well signed. The length of the trail will also need to be taken into consideration for a beginner hiker.

If you do want to do this trail, my advice would be to print off a map of the Bunyip State Park from the Parks Vic website, put a highlighter over the trail and take it with you when you go walking.
