But more seriously - I've walked it a few times. For me it was typically an overnighter - across the top, down to the lake to camp overnight, then out via the valley in a long day. The single most important thing I could recommend to enjoy it is to pay attention to what you wear on your feet. If you are walking out via the valley of desperation there's a lot of crossings of the river via wading, so light footwear that drains and air dries is best, as you have to walk across that river so many times on that exit. I typically stick with ordinary runners with a light cheap sock, but then I'm used to walking in and out of rivers all days long (a flyfishing tragic). Boots and goretex are a no-no as you have to wade on that way out.

otherwise - look around and enjoy.

Watch the weather forecast. If it snows properly then access to / from McFarlane saddle could become interesting. Carry wheel chains, snow shovel, etc..Carrying a chainsaw is also wise when driving out on those remote dirt roads. It has been rather windy lately. Trees do fall down or drop large branches.

Seriously? Sure in a good winter season but we can't get it to snow on the peaks this year so not much chance of that happening.

There has been a track closure due to a fire so check the details if heading there

There's another source for the track closures:
https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/places-to- ... tali-karng

Due to current bushfire in the Licola area of the Alpine National Park, the following tracks and visitor sites are closed.

All walking tracks in the Tali Karng Network
·       Wellington Plains Walking Track
·       Gillios Walking Track
·       Riggal Spur Walking Track
·       Clive Lanigan Walking Track
·       Wellington River Walking Track
·       Echo Point Walking Track

Forty or so years ago I was skiing there in early September. The website says:
Aboriginal people do not oppose non-indigenous people visiting Tali Karng as long as they treat the area with respect. Camping at the lake is disrespectful, so please treat the area with care as you pass by the lake and camp elsewhere.

Have Parks Vic. installed a new dunny and water tank at Nyimba camping area?
Last time I went out there
on a March long weekend after a bushfire , in between lockdowns,
people
were pooing everywhere and fetching water from N********** creek was a bit of a chore.
