In days gone by the thinking was that the age of a child dictated how many kms they could walk per day.
Most kids in Oz don't run around outside as much as we did when we were small , we didn't have a screen of some sort in front of us the whole time and on the whole we were more active and not as rotund as many kids are today. Bushwalking /trekking means I can still hike rings around most people aged 6-60 in terms of stamina .

Yeah. I figure it's about finding that balance between resilience building and enjoyment thats the key for the kids. Personally I've o problem humping his gear and mine (20kg plus doesn't bother me. I like the challenge, and have carried more in the past), however he has to get used to carrying some gear while not being too buggered from it at this age. My 7yo daughter now is bugging me to take her, but I think I'll start her on some easy day walks (probably around Mt Buller) before any overnight stuff.

I'm eager to do the hike from Mt Buller to Mt Stirling next before the snow season hits. Anyone know how this compares to the southern sections of Wilsons Prom in terms of difficulty (aside from the altitude and weather unpredictability)?
