Don't know whether to laugh or ???????? ........"But about four hours into the trek, they realised they didn’t know where they were."
It was a 2 hour walk and it took 2 more hours to realise they didn't know where they were........... but they did stay put once they
realised they were lost.

Apart from the piece of rope and packet of Twisties, I am curious to know what other supplies and equipment they had with them. Anyway, glad they were found.

I am glad they are safe too. I liked this line from the herald sun article:
"she turned the Twistie packet inside-out to try and flag the chopper using the reflective surface."

Firstly and most import, they are safe and well.
Its easy for us to criticise because we are well aware of the potential dangers when going bush so I won't be too harsh but I have to say that it is a common occurrence.
Only last weekend I was up behind Cradle Mountain and saw plenty of people not dressed appropriately but the one that really stood out was the couple who were in jeans and tshirts, no jackets or jumpers, no anything. She was obviously not happy happy with him because she was walking several metres behind him with quite a snarl lol
The weather was closing in fast and the breeze had quite a bite to it. I remember saying to my son that if it started raining which it was very close to doing, they would be in all sorts of trouble. Admittedly we were only a couple of hours from the car park but I wouldn't like to have been wet in those temperatures for a couple of hours.
As soon as we got back to the car park it started spitting................

If you take a few bags you could sew them together for a space blanket ...

Of course it's an offence, but there's another. From 1 June 2014 it is an offence to get lost without a booking. This is so that S&R can arrange their searches, which due to Victorian government cutbacks are now 9-5 Monday to Friday. This will save quite a bit of money for Victorians. Premier Napthine said that funds so saved would be used on the East West Link, which will be losing about $3-6 billion over its life.

Gosh, almost hilarious reading the news report. But I shouldn't.
Have to say, at least they had some rope, had a mini thermal/communication material (Twistie bag) and a good heat source (the bulldog). Now, "Ms Newby" was just 21?!?

C'mon. Dont be too harsh on these guys. Good on em for getting out there and giving it a go and it was probably a great experience. The main thing is they got out safe and our SAR teams got some on the job training.

He he he.
everyone s glad they are safe and well and yes good on them for getting out of werribee.
Maybe basic bush craft and first aid should be taught in school. And I mean basic like when you realize your lost stop , if you cut your self apply pressure etc. Plenty of kids wonder off and get lost not far from home. They currently looking for a little boy in a spiderman costume. Its been 5 days now.
Probably a bit more exciting than some of the crap they teach today

There is only so much that parents, schools and the community can do. Despite widespread knowledge of the dangers, many drink too much, eat too much, eat the wrong foods, smoke, drive dangerously and many other sorts of things that end badly. There will always be people with minimal experience, fitness and judgement going into places where they should not go without a good leader.
I wonder how many people who are suitably equipped with suitable experience come to grief, and how that figure relates to those without. I suspect that a meaningful comparison would be quite hard, and that only an estimate would be possible. This is due to information being unavailable (numbers of people in the bush) and some aspects being subjective (adequate or not experience, gear, etc).
Regardless, whilst better education is useful, some will slip though, and perhaps others will be the victims of happenstance. The best that can be hoped is that numbers are small and that those involved get off relatively lightly.

Errr... Why aren't parents teaching these? Why aren't parents enrolling kid in the appropriate extra-curricular activities to learn these skills? Those are hardly the responsibilities of our tax funded education system. It's academic education, not a child minding service.

Yep Strider I agree "Get some dirt on your kids" it will not normally hurt them.
They clean up OK again (maybe not the clothes though).
But these days it seems that even the new parents are just not experienced at getting outdoors and dirty except maybe a sports field once a week.
I applaud the guys who were lost overnight for doing the right thing allowing an easy return to their families etc without splitting up and staying together. I would like to think they have learnt a lot about roughing it for a night.

I remember when I was at school we had outdoor ed. We learnt about the environment and went on camps and bush walks. Was heaps of fun. As as most camps there was an educational component. As for academic education have look at the state of some of our youth today. No repect, no manners and end up on the dole. I agree parents need to teach their kids things but unfortunately alot of parents dont even know where their children are at 2am. I watched a young lady the other day use a calculator to work out how much change to give me for the $2:50 pie I brought after I gave her a $5 note. Mmmm
maybe we need to bring back tech schools.

Schools still have various camps for the kids but getting harder by the year, especially those wild camps. Unfortunately schools and teachers get sued aggressively by families when accidents happen. So the root cause comes back to the society and families, not the education system. As for manners, that's what parents and family are for and school can only play a supplemental role for most.
As for the curriculum, one that I have experienced over the last few years. Back in my son's primary school, teachers had trouble getting kids to work on the times table and some kids still had trouble by year 6. Why? The only complaint I hear of fellow parents is there being too much homework for their precious or why their precious are falling behind? Any bit of academic pressure would bring in a bunch of complaints.

Yes I agree. Sad really that u cant do anything without the threat of being sued and we are wrapping kids up in cotton wool. No cartwheels , ball games, monkey bars no scoring in games every ones a winner.
bring back british bulldogs, brandy, kiss chasey. Stuff kids did. (Being kids and having fun and learning).
Worried about the world my daughter is growing up in. Then again maybe my parents said the same.
I applaud anyone who takes their family out bush walking.
