Recently used these campgrounds, which were based for day walks. The option of honesty box is a great idea.

There were a few like this in NT. Only $6 per night + great facilities.

I don't see much prospect for a honesty box given how unhappy most of us are about paying for a service that doesn't even run to rubbish collection, and the fact that there's hardly any rangers left to enforce.

The x1 & 2 were taken at Mungo P&WS, NSW and the x3 is near Lake Albacutly and Wyperfeld NP, Victoria. We were happy campers there.

I'm more likely to use this kind of system than the stupid one that Parks Vic has introduced!!!!

Another good one is Murrundindi Reserve in Tolangi State Park at $7 per car.

I was thinking the same thing snowzone. The thing that irks me (apart from ludicrous costs) is that under
the Parks system you might find some @@#$ in your booked and paid for spot then you have to deal with it
yourself or ring Parks to receive a we are out of the office until 9:00am Monday morning message. Where as
if you just picked a spot and payed on arrivial you won't be out of pocket if none are left.

This probably belongs on the other thread: but I was at Cathedral a couple weeks back. We did the right thing and booked. Friends had gone up early and snagged a spot and just as well as the place was practically full. I got all stressed on the drive up - "what if there are no spots? Do we ask all the other campers to proove they've booked?".

We are trying to get my son (1.5) used to camping in a lead up to a festival early next year. I've now worked out it is cheaper to go to some Melbourne caravan parks with powered sites than it is to go to a proper park...

Bet the box gets stolen heaps. After a long weekend there would be thousands in it.

Could always put an IOU in it.

The care taker of the campground turned up each morning when we were there. Hence, I believe that the box was emptied and so is emptied each day.

Not at $10.00 per site per night Chris.
Say 20 sights @ 3 nights each (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) is only $600.00
I think the rangers collect daily when things are busy.

The envelope slot is located at the visitor information, which is next door to the workshop building for park staff.

Yeah probably a slight exaggeration. Just a little.

Just use WikiCamps Australia to find those campgrounds. That's what I was using when I was travelling and it's great. http://www.wikicamps.com.au/

Quite alot of the area's by the time you've added in fuel and food for the trip. It's almost cheaper to go out for a nice dinner and stay in a 5 star hotel...

With some of the $40+ night rumours I've heard (directly from parks workers) people will either not pay a cent unless caught or they will go offtrack and cause more damage to prevent getting caught or they will come with a sense of entitlement that their rubbish/mess will be cleaned as they are paying for a service not for protection of the area.

Vicious cycle. I can't see it getting better and I can't see a better way of doing it.

You are quite right. That is why we, two did not camp at Lake Mournpall and Wonga campgrounds ($34 or $36 per night). Instead, we went wild camping by the Murray River (with the use of a chemical toilet or by burying waste) and stayed at the Yaapeet campground. IMO, those fee are reasonable for a group of three+. Hallu, the camps app was useful.

Did it again over our trip to The Otways by base camp at a commercial camping ground with facilities such as toilets and hot showers..

Passed through a park's campsite with no toilet, but fee is about $12.0 per night. The sites were empty. We also noticed of a park's signpost of the booking and the contact phone number. But, there was no phone reception there.

Go wild camping with a tent.
