A man who was abseiling at Mt Buffalo, in Victoria's north east, has fallen 15 metres after his rope snapped.

The man landed in a pool of water at about 3:30pm Sunday afternoon, but managed to move himself to dry rocks nearby.

An ambulance helicopter could not get to the man so paramedics and SES crews are hiking to his location.

They will treat the man and stay with him overnight until he can be rescued on Monday.

Does anyone yet know what happened? It is exceptionally unusual (unheard of?) for a proper climbing rope to break unless it has been abused in some way.

Yea they got him out alright but he suffered back injuries according to The Age.

"An injured abseiler has been rescued after spending 19 hours trapped at the bottom of a cliff at Mt Buffalo in the state's north east.
The man, aged 24, endured zero-degree temperatures overnight, after he fell 20 metres while abseiling down the north wall of Mt Buffalo Gorge about 4.15pm on Sunday.
The man fell after his rope snapped, radio station 3AW reported.
He landed in a pool of water, but managed to move himself to dry rocks nearby.
His friends raised the alarm, but an ambulance helicopter could not reach the man so search and rescue police, paramedics and SES crews hiked to his location.
After being winched to safety, the man was taken by ambulance to Wangaratta Hospital.
He was later flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, with back injuries.
The North Wall is a 300-metre climb at Mt Buffalo Gorge, which is described by tour operators as one of the top climbing destinations in Victoria"

I think he was seen entering the water in the open pike position.
