Hi, has anyone done the new first stage of the Grampian Peaks Trail? We're all set to do it but noticed that all the notes say there is no water at Buggiga campsite (the new trail specific hut) nor the second camp site (borroughs hut). Anyone know what the go is? I've talked to staff at the info centre and its not quite clear. seems ludicrous to not have any water at the sites and I'm not keen to carry 3 days water. Thanks

I just finished this today. The Buggiga campsite has no water, but the Borroughs camp site has a strong, clear stream running past it.

My suggestion would be to bring water purification tablets, and make sure you fill up at the streams before Buggiga, then at Borroughs Hut. The last one good stream I remember was Splitter Falls, then not really anything until Borroughs.

We did the first 2 days in 1 day, so luckily it wasn't a big problem. Make sure you take enough water to last you from mid first day through to Borrough huts at the end of the second day.

I too would be interested in hearing about the state of water supplies along the trail, so any info would be hugely appreciated!

Hopefully doing the first stage later this month, so I will also be very keen to find out. If no one finds out, we'll take it upon ourselves and let you all know.

We ended up doing the walk last weekend (yay for Victorian public holiday for football). I quite enjoyed the walk which mainly joins up some existing walks (the main one to the pinnacles and up my rosea). The highlight being the walk up Mt Rosea. In terms of water - we dropped some at sundial carpark which is one the track, about 1km before the Bugiga campsite and a bit more at Rosea car park about 1 km after Bugiga (thinking some water for cooking and then next day's hike). Both are on the main road around and neither meant any extra walking.
The Bugiga campsite has no streams/ water around nor really on the way either. There is a small tank between the 2 toilets but couldn't see how big it was or how full. It appears to be only filled through rain and only from the toilet roofs (can't collect water from the shelter there). There as certainty some last weekend, but there were also a number of campers who left the water running to wash dishes etc so probably no guarantees (particular if it hasn't rained for a few weeks). There is a large creek and another tank of water at Boroughs huts (second campsite) which is busy with general campers. But we didn't see any running water throughout the hike other than there (ie no real creek crossings or anything).

It sounds like it's been a dry year around there.
