Hi -
our family of 5 is coming over from WA to hike to the southern most point of mainland Australia (as we have been north, east and west) any reason for a holiday.

Looking at the govt information on the website. From Telegraph Saddle car park to South point - it says it is approximately 5 hrs (easy / moderate hike ~ 15km). So my question - if this is what we are planning on just going to south point - is it reasonable to think that we could do this in a day - if we get an early start ?

Kids are happy hikers and are used to hiking 15kms in a couple of hours.. Whilst I would like to go to the light house station - I cant justify the $650+ that it would cost for the 5 of us to stay there.

It is an easy walk (took me six and a half hours recently, not including stops). From your brief description of your capabilities it seems that you'd comfortably do it in a day. There is a gradual c.180m descent, flat for a bit, then a gradual ascent of c.240m. All of that except for an optional 2.7km walking track is on a wide gravel road -- not exactly a thing of beauty, though there are some views and you're in some appealing bush. The last leg is a walking track (3.7km), descending c.260m.

You cannot actually get to the southernmost point due to a revegetation zone. Possibly the best bit would be the wider views from the track as you get closer to the point.

If you haven't previously been to Wilsons Promontory your party might enjoy the more popular walk to Sealers Cove and back (20.4km) rather the South Point walk.

Could you possibly stay overnight at Roaring Meg? That way you could do both, see South Point and then the Lighthouse the day after (or vice versa).

The Sealers' cove/Refuge Cove/ Little Waterloo Bay is the best bet for a 36 Km Prom. hike with a camp overnight at Refuge cove.
