Day hikes near Bright

Hi All!

Hubby and I have just booked an anniversary trip for May in Bright.

Would love some input on day hikes nearby - as in, Feathertop 22km is too long a day hike for an anniversary trip! Thinking more like 8 - 12km... or several shorter walks....
Also aware that there might be snow, so I'd rather pick shorter ones rather than longer, as so far, we've only done summer hikes.

Bogong I'd rather also do when it's a bit warmer I think!

Mt. Buffalo has lots of half day and day walks that are very pleasant. You could not do them all in three days.
The Big walk from Eurobin Creek Picnic ground can be more easily done if you leave a car at the Chalet and take another car back to the bottom and start from there.

If you have a suitable vehicle ( and a chainsaw just in case) then the Northern Razorback via Stoney Tops Track is a good day walk. You can go up to Mt. Feathertop from the winter seasonal closure gate if you start early and the weather is clear. It is the shortest and most scenic route to the summit.
From Bright you can reach the Mt. Hotham area or the Falls Creek area which both have good day walks.

Mt. Porpunkah is not far away from Bright either.

Mt. Bogong can be reached quite easily from Camp Creek Gap up the Eskdale spur. Pick a clear settled day and start early. Take food , water and a Gore-Tex jacket.

The days are quite short in May so start walking early.

Feathertop over the Razorback is an easy day walk. There is always the chance of snow or bad weather but you have lots of good options already provided. In case of bad weather, stay in bed. It is an anniversary after all.

Thanks all - I have a little Mazda 2 and I've read that the road up to Mt Feathertop is 4WD and unsuitable for small cars... and mine is about as small and not-off-road as you can get.

The bogong one looks is probably too long for what I'm after too - 12km I think would be the max I want to do in this trip! I'll google some of the other suggestions - thanks!!

Something a wee bit out of whack with your info Staceykate. There is no road of any sort to Mt Feathertop. The day walk suggested by Explora starts near Diamantina Hut on the Great Alpine Road, and access to that jump off point from Bright is via 100% very good bitumen.

The views from the Razorback/Feathertop walk are excellent. Thoroughly recommended. Best to have a early start for a relaxed day.

My understanding is that PCV's info is accurate.
There is a vehicle track to the North Razorback spur.
I think with a 4WD and with the seasonal gate open you can get quite close to the summit.

Plenty of great short walks in Mt Buffalo.
For a short run out of Mt Hotham - Mt Loch is a doddle.

It's not all that far to whip over Tawonga Gap to Mt Beauty and then up to Falls Creek and some BHP walking.

The Northern Razorback is a great walk . I did it with friends in Autumn on a sunny day. I drive an AWD with All terrain tyres and Limited slip differential. I carry a chainsaw in my vehicle and can use it properly .We walked from the winter gate/ picnic table to the summit and back.
You cannot drive to near the summit of Mt. FT but the winter gate to the summit is about 8 km one way.

The BHP is great for walking and XC skiing.
The car park for Granite Flat Spur gets you quite close to the Mt. Bogong summit. Again you need a suitable vehicle.
I have walked up from the winter gate for Granite flat spur on the bend in the road along the Hollow way logging road. It adds another hour one way to the walk. With a day pack you'd smash it out if you are fit and the weather is kind.
I have walked from Cleve Cole hut to Granite Flat Spur car park and back. It is a solid day walk.

I forgot to mention The TWINS is quite a worthwhile day hike starting at the Mt. St. Bernard Hospice site on the Great Alpine Road ,heading up towards Mt. Hotham.
