I don't see any real issue. Early September should still have enough snow. There is always the chance of a thaw then freeze overnight during spring but the Grey Hills track is not treacherous in my view. Going down Mt. Arthur is steep in places but would be easier than doing the Crosscut and down Buggery in winter (which I have done). Being north facing, icy sections may thaw anyway unless it is early morning which is unlikely if you time it right. Going up Quartz can be a little tricky in snow. It doesn't get as much sun. I used to carry boot crampons and only ever used them once but it is something you could consider if you are concerned. Hard to know where the snow line will be then but this year has already surpassed my expectations. Snow came down pretty low last night and I can see snow hanging in the trees around 1000m ASL.
Hope it is a good trip for you.
