o'reilly's fire

Postby dannnnn » Sun 23 Sep, 2012 9:20 pm

did anyone get stuck by the fire up at o'reilly's today??

i was on the way down the hill at about 4.30pm and we spotted a fire off in the distance. the missus made a joke that it'd be terrible if we had to drive through the fire... and soon enough 10mins down the hill (just past mt cainable) there were huge flames on either side of the road and thick smoke. there was nothing blocking the road and we figured it would be much better to drive through it and be down the bottom of the hill, than to play it safe and get stuck up a hill that only has one road down... which could possibly be even worse... and sure enough we got home ok. but i heard they closed the road around 4.35?? we passed a bunch of fire trucks and cop cars heading up so it makes sense. and we only realised later that getting marooned at o'reillys would make for an excellent excuse to miss work on monday.. doph!! did everyone get home ok??

maybe a good excuse to miss work, but not the best way to spend a day off. As a veteran of two Victorian bushfires, I prefer to leave well-enough alone now.

A group from the Brisbane Bush Walkers did get stuck up there and were sent back up the mountain for the night. However shortly after that they were escorted back through the fire under police escort. They made it home safe n sound :-)
