Advice needed from Lamington Experts

Postby gentlemanbushwalker » Sat 27 Oct, 2012 8:18 pm

Hi All,

Notice there is no shortage of Experienced Lamington NP Adventurers out here
Can anyone suggest a good overnighter? Organising a group to head out there.

Unmarked/no trail is fine. Will be all moderately young but experienced bushmen, just more familiar with Springbok and Tweed Valley. We will be taking adequate water, shelter, first aid, toppo maps (not GPS) and as much local knowledge as is available.

Of course peaks are the main attraction... not technical climbing however. West peak Cougal is my personal 'heights/exposure' limit

So far Neglected Mountain looks good. Have heard Lost World is pretty wild so maybe for round 2.

Any suggestions?

G'day mate, though I'd chime in seeing no-one else has.

I'm also plannng my first visit to Lamington in the near future and have been doing some research as to how I can fill up 2-3 days of walking. If you haven't been there before I don't think you need expert advice, there is plenty of information available on the web, via the park office or on here. I've also got myself a copy of the HEMA map for Lamington, it's got plenty of good info on it, all the walking tracks with distances, times and the difficulty levels, lookouts, waterfalls etc.

As for camping you could walk from Binna Burra and stay at O'reilly's (whch is what I plan to do on one of my nights) or there are 3 bush camps on the graded walking track system and 7 off-track bush campsites. Note that ALL the bush camps are closed from December 1 to January 31 each year to "allow for spelling of the sites during the wet season when they are most vulnerable to impacts from camping, including soil being compacted or eroded, vegetation damaged and litter left in the park"...
ALWAYS be yourself.
Unless you can be outside, then ALWAYS be outside.

Lost World is definitely up there exposure wise, but it is up there with my favourite overnight walks that I've done. Great adventure for a weekend. Needs a car shuffle though too. Made a lot quicker if you have a 4wd to go up Duck Creek Rd. instead of all the way around the standard rd.

You'll struggle to get any views from any of the peaks along the ridge to Point Lookout. We camped on Mt. Throakban one night on our way through to the Stinson wreck. From what I remember there was a bit of space there.

Can't comment on Neglected Mountain sorry.

You'll enjoy Neglected Mt....don't leave your camera at home.
If nature plays ball, catch the setting suns rays on Buchanan's Fort, Mt Widgee & Mt Westray.
Rise early, walk along the ridgeline a short distance, to catch the dawn spreading westward before your very eyes.
Short, steep, enjoyable ridgeline walk.
Mountain views are good for my soul...& getting to them is good for my waistline !

Keen to check out Lost World, maybe next season. Looks a bit hairy.

OK, I'm going for a look in the morning. Should get to GapCreek Rd by 630. I'm hoping its pretty self explanatory. ....down the road theres a wooden gate, an NPsign....head westish until I hit the ridge and head north up the ridge?

That's basically it....through the gate, past the lemon tree, follow the track left in front of the shack..
...follow the steep ridge to another ridge......turn right, then follow this all the way to your destination. :)
Good luck....watch out for snicky snakes !
