Where For Scarpa SL Boot Repair

Postby johnwmck » Mon 16 Jan, 2012 10:33 pm

Fellow Forum Members
I own a pair of Scarpa SL Boots. The sole in one of the boots has become a very effective NBL clicka clacka - yes the glue has 'let go'.
I am seeking referral to a very good bushwalking boot repairer.
Suggestions most welcome.

John

Hi

I hope that you have better luck than me. I had the soles reglued but they began to fail after the first walk. It is definitely a job beyond a mall based shoe repairer. I also found that Freesole last about two to four days before it flakes off. I find of all things that board walks are the hardest on the boots as the toe tends to catch in the gap

Cheers

My brother had his sole reglued on his light weight scarpa boots in the city somewhere. I'll see if I can find out the name. He thinks the waterproofing isn't as good as it was but they definitely haven't come off again for a couple of years now since they were done.

Have tried a getting Scarpa soles reglued with little long term success - both with a professional boot repairer and also tying some home efforts, but alas to no avail.- They are still good for round the yard or short walks but not reliable enough for throughwalks or off track walks. Once that the toe starts to come loose it's a quick and terminal demise. How old are tthe boots??

Hi,

Had my scarpas resoled (new soles) as the glue had let go and soles were worn out, nearly two years ago. New vibram soles, excellent job, cost about $110.00 I think from memory. Well worth it. Ring them first. I posted the boots with a note in the box giving my details and what is wrong with them. Were posted back in about a week, with an invoice in there, that had the account details.

Posted them to: Nu-Tred Sports and Casual Shoe Resoling

Awsome responses - thanks. :)

Ent; sorry to hear things did not work out for you with re-soling.

cams; how did you go locating where your brothers re-soling was done?

kbm63; my Scarpa SL's are about 12 years old, have been used in a wide variety of conditions, have been well looked after, and are in quite good condition considering, and I believe definately in good enough condition to be re-soled. SL's are designed to be re-soled, and have to be very knocked around not to be a candidate. However, the job does need to be done the right way, right gear, right person, and that I am not - I need help!!!!
Was the professional boot repairer you tried (that did not work) based in Brisbane?

ossie; thanks for the Sydeny postage tip / option regards what sounds like a well and truely 'act together' Vibram based bush-walking boot re-soler. I shall definately be in contact with 'Nu-Tred....'.

Fellow forum members and visitors, any suggestions regards a Brisbane based specialist???!!!! - I prefer to deal locally if the right operator is around. SE Qld has 2 1/2 million humans or more now - surely someone with the expertise / experience is out there :)

Kind regards
John

Thanks for the tip abceight

I have had a scramble aound and currently did not find any brand new SL's for less than about $240. Timing I guess. I would like to have scored brand new at the $170 mark too - did that include free postage as well?

And I do luv my SL's as long in the tooth that they are - still in good nick and kinda attached to em.

Kind regards
John

Thanks abceight

This time round I have gone with the Nu Trek Sydney postage option, not being able to find any sub $200 new SL's for now. Should be back on my SL's within next couple of weeks.

Request still stands for any advice regards a suitable bushwalking boot re-soler in the SEQ area.

Thanks everyone who has contributed to this topic this far.

Kind regards

I recently heard a romour that Scarpa were going to stop making the solid leather SL boots. Don't know how true it is.
Good luck getting them repaired. I'm fortunate in that I've never had any problems with them.

I had the sole come off one of my Scarpa Treks (mid-2009) and searched Brisbane for ages before ringing Walkalong at 515 Camberwell Rd
Camberwell Victoria 3124 ((03) 9889-2800), and after a short discussion sent the pair off for re-soling. $150 for the job, and they have been excellent since. In fairness, I don't work them as hard as a lot of folk would. But I hate buying footwear (wide feet) and for me the repair was well worth it.

John,
This is likely a bit late for you, (I rarely check the QLD threads) but might be of interest to some.
In a pair of brand new boots I kicked out an arsonists fire and the boots dried out and the sole came away.
I had the sole repaired professionally with the latest cyrano acrylics?
The repair lasted"ish" a five day walk with a heavy pack and some water work, but I noticed it detaching almost completely during some between walk town road miles waiting for a Kiwi pass to clear.
Short story, the snowboarding guys in Wanaka put me onto this stuff, the KZ$16.00 Spanish "Shoe Goo", and directed me to a tramping store they had seen it, and where the staff didnt know they had it or what it was.
I got plenty of the stuff in deep, electrical taped then duct taped the repair then rammed whatever I could cram inside the boot to make the join vice tight. It had about seven hours over a flourescent light before I untaped it early the next morning in time for my lift out to the next walk.
The boot went, me and twenty six k pack over a couple of passes, steep rock climb, river work and with a couple of days constantly wet. The sole didnt budge.
Back home the boot has done tons of miles coastal rock hopping repeated salt water immersions and generally given a bit of a hard time. The sole is absolutely tight, and I even forget its ever been repaired.
I have had Scarpa SL resoled professionally and those soles stayed put but for other reasons they wound up relegated to lawnmowing boots.

Absolutely, before I let any bootmaker anywhere near any of my boots, I would use this stuff.

John,
With regard to resoling, even if the bootmaker has the correct last, your old boots will have changed shape to your foot and wear. Resoling doesnt necessarily return it to the original shape, it stretches your out of shape boot onto the last and where it winds up is anyones guess. You may have to break them in again and they may stretch entirely differently second time round. On top of that you have hooks loops and padding and lining which may be on borrowed time. It might be a good :D or poor :( result.

Hi tasadam
I hope the rumour that Scarpa will cease production of SL's is not true.
Hi Rob A
Thx for the ShoeGoo tip - I will order some and use on a few other blow out footwears around the place I don't wish to part with yet.
I hope the re-soling goes ok as well. Have had the boots back for a while back now, although with a hospitalised ma and a house move and other bits and pieces, my planned walks have not eventuated. Finally got to use the SL's last weekend at the One Night Stand downpour at Dalby - well they still keep the water out except for down the leg :) - my Driza Bone needs a good oil :) Seemed ok for the relatively short and light loading work-out they got - shall try something a bit more engaging soon - fingers crossed!!!!
Kind regards

Re: Where For Scarpa SL Boot Repair

Postby Tmun » Sat 15 Dec, 2012 1:43 pm

I started another thread elsewhere on the topic of Scarpa boots coming unglued. I've just sent my second pair back to Scarpa to see what they'll do. They replaced the first pair under warrranty. Juries still out on the second pair. I know all about good practice on boot storage and maintenance. Seems Scarpa just don't use very good glue. Either that or their quality control isn't up to much anymore. Any tips on a good brand of boots?
