A friend has given me some track notes for a walk from Paluma to Rollingstone, this looks like a sufficiently challenging walk with some crazy steep sections. It certainly looks worth a closer look. I can’t work out how to add attachments to forum posts, I’ll send you a PM with my email address and I can email you a copy if you want.

Just putting it out there to the brains trust and experience of the forum members…
I’m looking for recommendations for a week long hike in Queensland (preferably North Queensland). Here is the context; for a few years now, a friend and I plan a week each year to go hiking in the dry season (typically September/October). Most of these trips have been to Hinchinbrook Island and we have ‘done’ the island a number of ways, including a couple of trips up Mount Bowen (different routes), Pineapple Peak, Mount Straloch etc.
Whilst the island is a great place with some world class hiking, we would like to explore other places. So, we are looking for a suitable hike with the following ‘wish list’…
• Approx 1 week (Work Friday > 9 days off > work Mon. Travelling from Townsville & Atherton)
• Preferably in North Queensland
• Reasonably challenging (We are hikers, not climbers. But we are up for a challenge and the occasional rope haul)
• A wilderness area, ie the chance to get away from it all
Anyone care to share their thoughts on what might fit the bill…
Thanks in advance.

It's a great walk, particularly if you enjoy fishing and don't mind bush bashing, but I would be hesitant to recommend it to two who have not done it before. The major obstacle is the river crossings. If you don't know the best places to cross you may end up picking some of the harder ones. However, this time of year the water should be at it's lowest.
We do it in four days, and this ends up involving approximately six hours a day hiking. It really is a challenging walk, despite the limited altitude changes. There is a lot of rock hopping and bush bashing involved. The approach to Blencoe is a long one. It's probably going to take you 7 hours from Townsville as you have to go through Ravensho and Mt Garnet. Another option I know some guys take is to hire a helicopter to drop them right in the gorge. This cuts out the two or three hour descent too, which might not be to your liking. The views from the top are pretty spectacular.
Regarding the pick up. There is a 4wd track that takes you about 400m up to the river where you will find a ford. It continues about 5km up on the western side of the Herbert until a place known as Orange Tree. The track has been cleared about 3 months ago and should be in great condition. The end of this trail is probably the preferred place to be picked up, although there is nothing stopping you walking along the 4wd track (it's not the prettiest walking) or continuing to bash your way up the river (although in my experience this section is quite difficult to navigate).
I am very happy to give you more info if you are interested.
I should add that a PLB or sat phone should be considered necessary. There is no easy escape, if something goes wrong and you can't call a chopper, you are going to have to walk out some pretty demanding terrain.
