Gday all. Can anyone tell me what the track is like on the Carlo Sand Blow to Poona lake section of the Cooloola Great walk. Basicly all I want to know is the track a hard packed surface or is it a soft sand surface. And while I think of it does anyone know the distance from the track is the Bymien Picnic area.
Cheers
Craig

G'day Craig,
No idea what the track condition is like, but off my topo I would guess that from Bymien Picnic area to Poona Lake would be no more than 2.5 km each way.

Track is great, fairly hard packed and wide. Apx 2 km easy walk to Poona Lake and slightly up hill on way back. Poona lake is not much to look at because its over full. Crossing the sand blow is soft sand.

Personally, I would not waste any time at Poona Lake, instead, take a walk along the beach, heading south from Rainbow Beach.

Well as suggested. the tracks were nice on packed and yes only the Sand Blow was soft. Have to dissagree with ULWalkingPhil though. Poona Lake wasnt a waste of time. It was a very pretty Lake and very inviting. One of the other walkers that had been there last year, said that the level was down a fair way. By all accounts about 1mtr. The climb grade down to the lake looked alot steeper than it was coming up. All in all a pleasant walk.

Just one day giddyup. Carlo Sandblow to Poona lake and back is posted at 20km return from the main carpark. But we started at the beach so it was more like 24km. Was a good days workout. We made one side trip, but that was due to me not reading a sign post properly. It was only a mear 400mtr though.

I thought you may have loitered along the way for an evening.

Great photos Hunsta, brown water can be nice too, so what if it's not Lake McKenzie!

The water has a tea coloured look due to the tanun (spelling) that comes out of the leaves that fall in I think.

When I was last at Poona Lake the level was extremely high, so high it was dificult to find a vantage point and difficult to get to the lakes shore edge, its great to hear the level has dropped as much as reported.
Sounds like its worth the extra walk to reach the lake.
