Only the one full face plant, fortunately onto sphagnum not mud. Knee deep several times

Are the bikes actually permitted up there? 'Cause it seems a totally inappropriate place for them.

It seems so. Some sections had no bikes signs, but certainly no policing. One area had a full on MTB rogaining competion right alongside a motocross event. That was mostly on farm track but still in National Park. Things are a bit different too with attitudes to dogs. They are everywhere, on and off lead, and in the pubs.
