It was this time last year that I was up at Bogong for this one
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=10405&hilit=bogong+video

It was time to head back even if it just for the night during the long weekend.

Photo Credits go to my mate Asher and his skills with the view finder!

We were up early and the sun had yet to crack the horizon as my walking partner and I hit the road with Mt Bogong the destination.

This trip would be a quick over nighter in prep for a longer trip this winter once the snow flys. :D

Noon saw us parking the truck at the bottom of the Staircase Spur and a low layer of cloud hanging around. We shouldered our packs and started up passing a number of jolly day trippers on their way down. We passed Bivouac hut and I checked the log book for my last years to get the dates.

Just past the hut and up into the alpine we broke through the clouds to the views that always make it worth it.

After checking the rock outcrops with hope of ice climbs at some point this season we meandered off to the summit. There were a few large groups heading to Cleave Cole Hut so we continued over the summit and dropped into Black Saddle to set up our camp for the night. It was a great place with no one else in sight. We even enjoyed the fireworks for opening day from falls creek although they were very small from this distance!

The next day dawned completely socked in with fog and the wind had picked up as well. We started off for the West Peak working off the compass to keep the direction. We stopped for a moment to take out the map and mark a location and gps waypoint when the fog cleared for a few seconds and the sun came raging through. It was a special moment of beauty. West peak came into sight a short distance away and for our 30 minutes or so on the summit the fog would come over in waves obscuring our views for and then breaking for a few moments teasing us with spectacular visuals.

We started back towards the Summit Proper meandering our way along the tops imaging the awesome ski runs and after a quick bit to eat we started down Eskdale Spur. A short time later found us on the bitumen heading through the mountain passes back to Melbourne.

Bring on winter!

Brilliant photos! Thanks for sharing. Looks like you got better weather in winter than we did last summer. Enjoy your snow trip...

Oh man, the weather on last year's trip was great for the first two nights and then terrible for the thirds and fourth as the front moved over! I tend to keep my camera packed when the weather deteriorates. When its bad its bad eh.

:D

Only very small ice patches. Nothing still at this time yet. Was hoping to get the skis out next week or at least the snowshoes but it seems like it might be a walking trip!
