Mount Morgan - Koscuiszko National Park

Sat 11 May, 2013 7:45 pm

Hi,

Anyone been into the Mount Morgan area recently? I thinking about heading into that area for two to three days over the Queens Birthday long weekend, so I'm not too sure about access.

I'm looking into doing it in the near future as a circuit that also includes Bimberi Peak using the Lone Pine, Murray Gap and Yaouk trails. I haven't been in this area before though so I can not comment about the area though. Park at the locked gates at either Kennedy's road or Pockets Saddle road

I visited Mt Morgan last Christmas. It is a wonderful area. To combine with Bimberi Pk would be excellent. What would you like to know? You can approach from the ACT side via Murray Gap, and Oldfields or you can come in direct from Yaouk on the Lone Pine trail. I have done both and they are both excellent. If you come in on Lone Pine Trail you can make a good circuit of it by going out on the Yaouk Trail visiting both Mt Morgan and Bimberi Pk on the way through.

I actually approached Mt Morgan on a long day from Schofields Hut on Nungar Plain. Long but fantastic day.

Is there any sort of track or footpad that leads up to Mount Morgan from Lone Pine Trail? On my Rooftop's Namadgi ACT South 1:50k map it shows a 'Mt Morgan Walking Track' leading to the summit but I haven't seen this on any other map or been able to find any information online.

Your map is correct. There is a track. It is of course unsignposted. It leaves the Lone Pine Trail at the Bimberi Wilderness sign. It branches off to the left ( if coming up the hill from Yaouk). As a pad it leads across a grassy and swampy area. It leads around a corner when views of the mountain open up. From here the whole route is before you. the track continues past a camp site in the forest on the lower slopes and then up to the summit plateau. The middle peak is the highest but I recommend you climb all 3.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I was also thinking about heading over to Half Moon Peak from the top of Mt Morgan, then retracing my path back to Mt Morgan before heading down the ridgeline of the Gurrangorambia Range, heading towards Oldfields Hut. I also found a 2003 bushfires Geo Science Australia map, and it seems that this area was not burnt out in the 2003 fires. So I'm hoping that the scrub is not too bad. Anyone had any experience with the scrub in this area.

There is no track from Mt Morgan to Half Moon Pk. I suggest you begin your descent from the southern end of the mountain. The scrub is quite thick dropping down to the low saddle. And the saddle itself is quite boggy, particularly lower down. Look out for a piece of yellow closed cell mat that I lost coming down there.
