Be careful ordering Water purification from USA

Tue 23 Sep, 2014 7:58 pm

I have been using Aquamira water purification drops for some time now. The last bottle I ordered direct from Amazon USA. No problems. This time, I used a forwarding service, My Us. I have used them many times before for other gear with no issues.

This time though, after ordering two Aquamira kits via Amazon, I received an email from My Us, saying....

The chlorine dioxide in AquaMira is a prohibited substance. They cannot ship this product overseas or mail it back to Amazon, so they destroyed it. WT *$&# ???

I have just lost over $50 and am not impressed.

You have been warned.

Bummer! It's "heightened" security level period again, unfortunately. Remember travelling through the U.S. in the months and years after 911, the amount and kinds of prohibited items collected at X-ray security check points were mind boggling. No logic but just mass paranoia.

What is the security issue with chlorine dioxide? Possibly they mistook it for something that was actually harmful? I'd ask for compensation. They should have sent it back to Amazon.

I think it is chlorine dioxide gas that is rightly prohibited from air transportation. The tablets contain a precursor that reacts with water to make the gas and appear not to be prohibited. It seems like someone at the freight forwarder made a mistake and thought it was gas.

Bivouac outdoor in NZ stock it at only $39.95 NZ. They will ship to Australia

I use Katadyn Micropur MP1 tablets. There are two vendors in the US on eBay but the postage prices to Australia seem ridiculous for such small and light items. I'd be inclined to contact them to make sure the postage is correct - it is often calculated automatically and doesn't take into account that the item might be small and light.

These tabs are the ones used by the US military.

Definitely not prohibited as far as I can tell.

Katadyn Micropur Forte tablets cost $39.95 per 100 at my local outdoor shop. (Camp Hike Climb Hornsby) Seems like a better deal than ordering online when factoring shipping costs and overzealous postal authorities as well.

I haven't struck this problem with Aquamira before, may have just been a overzealous employee. The only problem I have had is some shippers no longer will ship liquids of any kind. TNT is one.

My bad! In my comments above I thought a tablet was being talked about, not a liquid. My comments related to tablets.

Thanks for the input people. I have again objected to My Us and have asked them to recheck considering it is not a gas. I have micropur tabs already, but they leave an aftertaste. The aquamira is a great product. I can buy it in oz but it is over twice the price. I will end up ordering from a local supplier, but just wanted to warn anyone else from making the same mistake. Cheers.
