Just wondering if anyone can tell me what this is? We saw it on a log on Friday in the bush just outside Warburton. It's is an area that wouldn't get too much human traffic. It doesn't look like any animal poo that I know of, although one of our thoughts was that perhaps it could be from a bird. Another thought was a type of fungus but we don't believe it is. As you can see from the photo it looks like it is slimy around the edges. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yes - I was thinking of a slime mould. It looks like it is an early stage - just a mass of amoebas.

Thanks heaps Moondog and Dave. I found a couple of similar photos on Google Images so I think you are both correct. I had never seen any thing like it so it was great to experience something new in the bush.

It looks like someone has hawked up their best and lobbed it onto the log!

We initially thought the same Brissy but it's size (about 8cm diameter), it's location and the slime surrounding it made us think differently.
