Food Weight Problem.

Sat 30 Jul, 2011 3:10 am

I am putting together a spreadsheet of possible things to take and am using a digital scale I got from the reject shop, under 20 bucks, but i am not sure if it is working right, the figures don't add up.

I was just wondering what are the rules in Australia with labelling weight of a food product, do they include the weight of the container as well or just what's in side, everything I weigh is heavier than stated on the packaging, was thinking a wonky scale :)

Thanks for any clarification.

Cheers.

As far as weights go.. it is the net weight of the food that should be stated. But there is a tendency to have a +/- of up to 7% variance in most cases.
If the item is in a solution that you don't eat then it is the net weight of the edible item eg feta cheese. You pay for the cheese not the brine. Probably a better example would be tinned fish.

I was also using the scale wrong, it was not level when I was using it, I weighed 1 litre of water and it said it was 500g, that's just screwy.

I put it on a level surface and now it's working fine, it's got these 4 feet that I think need to be on a level surface, all is good.

Cheers.
