Yesterday on Triple J’s Hack programme they had a story on the growing gun culture in Australia. Most of the programme was not centred on so-called conservation shooting, however much of the reasoning by clubs and gun lobbyists was for pest control. At approximately 19 minutes in there is more discussion on shooting for conservation purposes, including a claim by the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia that there is an effective strategy of pest control by recreational hunters in State Forests. There is a discussion on how the hunting and sports shooters lobbies have supported getting politicians on their side for more power to hunt (or obtain guns, which is not the issue discussed here). At 23:30 there is mention of Shooters Party MPs getting concessions for hunting in NPs. At 25:40 there is discussion that hunting lobbies have too much control over feral animal policy. Anyhow, an interesting programme with some interesting points brought up.
