DoC NZ announces 140 jobs to be axed

Postby wayno » Tue 26 Mar, 2013 9:55 am

The cuts include 118 regional management and administrative roles, as well as 22 operational roles including asset management, planning and inspection positions.

Mr Morrison said DoC would disestablish its existing 11 regional conservancy boundaries and replace them with six new regions.

I don't know the lay of NZ conservation, hiking etc...

Is this good, bad, ugly? It certainly seems like an unpleasant change.

Ugly! A knobbling of that country's major conservation agency. And a foretaste of what's likely to happen if the "conservatives" get into power in both Commonwealth and State governments in Australia.

helen clark the former labour PM, is extremely active in the outdoors. cross country skier, alpine and former high altitude climber. tramper... her govt were pretty benevolent with DOC
but as soon as the National govt came in, 50 million gone from teh annual budget and told to trim their cloth and find other ways to get their funding than govt...
our law makes free access to the parks mandatory so they would have to rewrite it to change that.

This is happening in most state agencies in Australia currently.

The difference between attrition and axing is subtle though from a politicians perspective. Nonetheless, the result is the same. (Ignoring that attrition is very blunt and you end up losing the people with employable skills).

yes they were going to axe 300 nz diplomatic staff, there were dozens of instant resignations from senior staff as a result.
John Key worked at one of the merchant banks in london , Merrel Lynch from memory..
he was responsible for restructuring the company there, he earned the nickname "the smiling assasin"
he has a very low key way of describing some sometimes quite alarming situations....

The-real-price-of-the-DOC-cuts
So if the real reason isn't money, then what is it? Ideology? Yes, National favours smaller government and isn't overly fond of the Public Service, as we've seen over the past few years. But halving the number of DOC conservancies and cutting 118 regional management and administration jobs, and a further 22 operational positions seems unnecessary just to prove a point - whatever the point actually was.
