MoterCycle Camping.

Postby John Sheridan » Sun 24 Mar, 2013 11:40 pm

Has anyone got on their Bike and did some camping here, getting a bike soon and was wondering if it was possible, any sites you can get to with your bike, I am going to go around Australia soon for a working Holiday so Maybe I will be forced to do this, just wondering if you whats good about it and whats bad about it :)

I really don't like the idea of leaving my bike all alone when I go on a hike for days and then come back and hope it's still there, I suppose car campers do this but a bike is a little easier to steal, maybe ?

Thanks for any suggestions help or chit chat in general :)

Gee, there's not many of us is there!

This bike/hike thing is what I do all the time, I actually think it's a pretty cool way to cover a fair
bit of ground, or get to some fairly remote areas, a bit cheaper and easier than by 4wd.
I ride a Yamaha Tenere 660, which is a good balance between road/offroad, pretty comfy and a nice
fuel range to boot. Known as super reliable too, which is handy.

One of the hassles I guess is having one set of gear/clothing for the bike and then another for the hike bit.
My usual practice is to pore over maps, pick a destination then ride a bit short of that and hike the rest of
the way. Sometimes that means hiding the bike but that's not too hard, bikes can be very well hidden just
off a track, then I will walk the rest of the way, maybe sleep the night and head back the next day. Just
gotta remember where the bike is![ Not too hard in these GPS days ]

Slowly becoming more brutal in my gear selection, going lighter and simpler. I pretty much only use a tarp and bug bivy,
and am currently shopping for a better sleeping bag. I like stoves too, and have a growing collection [just ordered
a titanium jobbie from the states] Walking shoes/runners[ not a fan of boots] are also due an upgrade.

Once I do a token bit of house painting to keep good lady happy, I'm off to the area between Hyden and Norseman
[over here in the west] to explore a bit, hopefully sometime next week.

Any more query's, feel free to ask, cheers...

If you want more info on this have a look at this. http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32
Advrider is a global forum on Adventure motorcycle riding which can mean different things to different people but basically revolves around touring and exploring out of the way places on motorbikes. people on ADV are riding round the world or through Mongolia or through the victorian high country. Some of our friends from the site are ex bushwalkers/ski tourers whose knees have given up and others have always ridden but love remote bush areas.
Careful it can take over a bit. enjoy.
