What happened to the "floating islands" near Colac, VIC?

Postby David M » Thu 10 Jul, 2014 6:26 pm

This is more about a nature reserve than bushwalking so I hope people don't mind... Years ago I remember there were "floating islands" near Colac in Victoria, specifically at Pirron Yallock. These were made of peat mats which had been burned underneath due to a bushfire and had seperated from the ground to become floating islands. They stopped floating at some point due to the water level changing but I was driving through there today and could not find the reserve where they once were. Does anyone have some info.?

Hello David, in from Colac near the floating islands. The reserve is still there but easy to pass as the old Koala Motel that was opposite was burnt down about 10yrs ago. Since then things have dried out and overgrown. Sad really.
