15mins. Quick & dirty project...added more eyelets to my walking hat for better ventilation. Punch hole, place on setter, gentle hit, done.

I would think the 300 mesh would be too fine and block too much heat, the 10 may be the pick.
(I assume the 10/100/300 is the number of bits of wire running over a length of 1 cm)
The SS screen sheet isn't as flexible as the cloth I have...but it does the same job & it's nice to have a choice of mesh count to play with.

This is 100. Cut to size & fold over edges.
Sourcing the SS clothlike properties locally is proving difficult...I'm thinking along the lines of a SS coffee filter of some kind. Google : - flexible stainless steel coffee filter mesh.
Don't bother mucking around if your just boiling water for freeze dried or dehydrated.

I usually steam & boil, bake once in a blue moon & almost never fry. But, there's no harm in experimenting.

Mmmm, Curry Carrot soup...onions, garlic, carrots, knob of tumeric, mild fiji curry powder, veg stock & seasoning. Fresh tumeric stains the tips of your fingers bright orange.
Taste & adjust. Blitz & dehydrate.
Grind smaller if your Cold Soaking. Add cold water, shake. Done
Less water if you want a dip for crackers or flat bread etc.
Hot soup. Add to water & bring to boil...voila. Have with torn baby French stick, or add dehydrated rice, powdered coconut cream etc etc.

Green split bean dhal...will put the rest in the dehydrator.
Onions, garlic, Thai green curry paste, green split mung beans, seasoning, vegie stock powder & coconut cream powder.
Beans will absorb the flavoured liquid. Coconut smoothes out the heat of the green curry, nice warming winter meal.
Pretend it's a cup-a-soup, over rice, thicker with flat bread...
Ok for no cook/cold Soakers out there.
Silent but deadly in a confined space, fine on your own but your partner may give you a dead arm.

I might try adding some asafoetida/hing next time, see if that helps with the flatulence.

About to fire up the dehydrator to get ready for some Mt Barney goodness.
Iv'e never tried to do any Soups at all - Time to change that as it start getting colder!

If it suits the kind of soup you make, after fully dehydrating it, put in the blender or thermomix for a few seconds on high speed. Blend it into a fine powder. Then it rehydrates very quickly.
Only suitable for soups that you don't want lumpy stuff left in them. I do pumpkin soup and tomato soup this way.
I also add a bit of arrowroot powder or cornflour to the soup powder. This way, it ends up nice and thick in your mug. If you don't do this, you are more likely to have thicker stuff at the bottom and thinner liquid on top, after rehydrating. (I do the same for curries, or any other saucy dehydrated food).

I was saving the Dried onion packets from the Mi Goreng noodles my kids and husband sometimes eat to add extra spice to my bushwalking cuisine. I tried some on a day walk last week when I had a decadent hot lunch. Unfortunately just a single sachet had dreadful effects that I wish I was sleeping out in the wilderness when I experienced the full effects- it is a wonder I am still married after that little digestive episode.
As far as projects in isolation. Yesterday I made pot cosys for various cookware, experimenting with two sorts of reflective stuff. I ended up discarding my first effort pictured on my 550ml pot made with some reflective packaging and used the windscreen cover instead. A touch heavier but much more user friendly and probably more effective as its intended purpose. I am no good at craft, the end results are ugly and rough- but the task kept me occupied for a while at any rate.
I also played with sleeping bags. I got a 2nd hand Marmot women's bag this week. Similar temp rating to my Aegismax bag. I decided the loft on the new bag could be improved so down washed today. Will have to do a comparison shot of my finished washed product.
Going to do some more dehy meals too I think, the pics on here have inspired me to branch out and try some different things with it.

Suprised if it were the dried onions!
The soft spice refill packets, I have used those dried onions as a substitute for fresh when cooking.
Haven't tried the bulk fried onion ala supermarket.

Not keen to give it another try to test the theory though

Better out than in!
We can officially go sleep in a tent soon, fingers crossed.

I really, really hope so.
Might try the Goreng onions again then, with the tent doors rolled up

Probably was the dried onions. You need to pre-soak them and then cook them for double the recommended time in order to get them fully rehydrated, or they ferment in your gut.
Memories of dehy vegies from the 60s and the terrible smells, for the same reasons. The Kiwis used to carry miniature pressure cookers for the vegies - worked too, but desperately heavy things.
Which is why it's all 'freeze-dried' these days.
Cheers

Moreish...Pumpkin soup blitzed, dehydrated & powdered. Powdered coconut milk added separately. Really yummy.

Regarding onions, I have found that fried crispy onion works homemade or purchased, alternatively just take an onion (or desired size piece). They are remarkably robust and pack well.

I've actually gotten the finger out and repaired a couple of small items. Next is to tackle the massive pile of walking clothes (mainly trousers) that need mending. Blech.

More experimentation, Dehydrating firm tofu... we'll see how it turns out.

...Whether Cold Soaking for 2hrs or boil then stick in pot cosy for 15-20mins...imagine bacon rindy chewy noodles, not as bad as thought they going to be.

Added to flavoursome meals for texture as thin sticks, or small cubes, it's fine.
Freeze, thaw, cut to shape desired, simmer in some stock,( it will absorb some flavour), dehydrate.

I just fully dis-assembled the chiminea I built from old LPG bottles. Scrubbed it down and sealed some very leaky welds.
Ordered some 150mm flue pipe and re-assembled and then painted the 90kilo tank with High Temperature stove black.
Fired it up last nite to cure the paint. the new flue draws much better than the old 4" one because I extended it a section.
Also it's now triple skin all the way instead of single skin so it loses less heat in a breeze

For those who care about these things the wooden fence is protected by a 3 layer heat shield plus the fence is steel clad under that.
I put a probe into the gap a while back when the fire was burning hot and the inner gap was at ambient air temperature.

I picked up the 90kg bottle from the side of the road several years ago, having seen many chimineas made from them up country

Dehydrated & powdered Plain & Raspberry yogurt...grainy when hydrated but the tang is still there, thickens nicely.

Here's my 'isolation project':
Eat It - recipe management for iOS and macOSI wrote a recipes management app (or 'application' as we used to call them in the old days) when Mac OS X first came out. I sold it off to anther developer who dropped support several years ago, and with the latest major release of macOS, it no longer runs (since support for 32 bit apps has been removed).
So I've now written 'Eat It' to take over where 'Yum' left off. This time it's focused on iOS (with a macOS/Catalyst port) and it's currently undergoing beta testing. It imports the old Yum recipe files, and already has more features than Yum did.
Sure keeps me from being bored.
I just wish I had more time to get back to 'GIST' (replacement for my other sold-to-another-developer-who-abandoned-it 'Maps n Trax' app) for mapping, navigation and GIS on iOS. Still, it works well enough for my needs. Just not suitable for the public yet.
