Gas Cannisters - South Coast Track

Planning to do this walk in last week of February and have just booked my flight. I am aware that I can purchase a universal screw mount gas cylinder at Melalueca. Does anyone know whether a msr pocket rocket will fit this? Just want to make sure that I am carrying the right cooking gear. The size I believe is 230 grams. If I only use it for heating water for the main meal of the day - and a cuppa for brekky and dinner, would two of these be sufficient for the trip? Or would three cylinders be better? Plan to have a rest day at Deadmans.
If anyone can help me with this query, it would be much appreciated.

My pocket rocket fits all the 230/227g cylinders including Kovea, MSR and Coleman. Pretty sure the thread size is standard across brands so you shouldn't have a problem. Two cylinders should be ample - I usually average no more than 30g per day and on a recent 7 day trip only used 15g/day (with a wind shield).

Thanks for your help rohjoe. Got back from the South Coast track on Saturday and all up only used one 230g cylinder for 8 days. I did purchase two - just in case, but did not look like needing it. Still have some gas left.

Hey this is a good thread.

I'm planning to change my stove from a metho Trangia to something much lighter and feul economic system. Already I have reduced my stove weight to about 201g and anticipate needing up top 90g feul a day (three hot meals) and would like to reduce the feul weight considerabley. If the feul weight will only be a couple hundred grams if will not be worth the change - or will it?

All the foods I am preparing are mix in water, boil {turn off the stove} and sit (to complete rehydration) and eat.

What are your experienced thoughts?

How were the river levels on the track Andrew?? I'd imagine Granite bay + The Rivulet would have been flowing?

Breakfast: porridge
Lunch: cold couscous or polenta prepared the night before.
Dinner: Jerky and vegie stew muck.

Out of interest there was about 20+ used and possibly even brand new gas cylinders in the huts at Melaluca.
People can't fly out with them, so they end up getting left behind.

So you might want to buy one and grab one from the hut if your worried about one being enough.

In hindsight we didn't need to purchase a cylinder - although I wouldn't say that its worth the risk of turning up and
finding that they've cleared out all the cylinders.
