I nearly trod on a red bellied black about 3 hours ago. Walking along, enjoying a break in the trees to look at the sky, looked down and the snake was exiting the path where I was about to tread. I think a lot of bites are avoided because the snakes are paying more attention than the hiker.

Had a little nap after lunch in the Nattai recently, laying down with my head propped on one log and my feet on another. Woke up and started packing up, when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. Looking up there was a brown snake gliding by about 3 metres away. Was a little disconcerting.

Brisbane snake risk
People in Queenslands capital are more likely to suffer a snakebite than their country cousins. According to figures released from Queensland ambulance Brisbaneites are more likely to be bitten than residents in the outback. A total of 156 people were bitten by venomous snakes across Brisbane region in the past 12 months to November 18 this year.
Outback regions such as the north west area had 11 cases and the south west just 4 cases.

Two men in their 70s and a teenage girl were all taken to hospital in stable conditions for the bites, that occurred in the north and south of the state on Friday night.

Warmer weather and housing development in rural areas are likely contributors to the increase in bite victims, experts say.

Is a good discussion on snake bite first aid in a thread in the equipment forum. some of the common assumptions are being tested. Unfortunatly it seems the commond advice of apply a pressure bandage has several variables and treatment pathways. and not all reputable medical organisations agree on the best treatment.

I stepped on a snake on the Three Capes Track week before last Only knew I'd done it because my husband told me. It slithered off into the bush apparently unharmed - small skinny brown thing, so I'm guessing white-lipped snake.

Interesting, never seen clothing nor beer choice in the empirical data on snake bite or that either indicates lack of intelligence.

The 68-year-old man, who was travelling with a friend, was bitten by a western brown snake and died last Wednesday.
