On a trip in the central highlands of Tasmania a couple of years, ago, I took an iPod for the first time. Because of the time of year, it was near zero at sundown, so we typically went to bed about 6pm and got up at 6am.
I would tend to wake up about 1am, having had enough sleep, so I listened to Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods for an hour before going back to sleep. The iPod is an essential part of my gear now, and oh-so-much-lighter than an e-book reader or even a real book that some others take.
