Missing bushwalker's body found

Postby raider » Sat 20 Apr, 2013 9:04 pm

So sad for his family. Dont want to open the solo hiking debate but whenever I see these stories I wonder whether things could've turned out differently if others had been present. Still prefer to solo hike most of the time though.

It's always sad when someone dies, but I'm a big fan of dying doing what you love.
My view is there are risks in everything, but also rewards. Any serious bushwalking carries risk. Solo stuff might be a bit more dangerous, but I'd done plenty of walks with other people that have lots of exposed scrambling and challenging nav. If something goes wrong, it could still be fatal. For me, I'm willing to take that risk because of the amazing rewards I get from bushwalking. From the sounds of things this guy was in the same boat.
It's sad when people die, but I'd rather die in my 40's in the bush than in my 80's dribbling on myself in a nursing home having wasted my life being safe!

That discussion has already been had here Tim. But personally, I'd rather die surrounded by family than cold and alone in the outdoors.

...and even with a life adventurous, the last days spent in the nursing home is still a possibility ( tho with great stories to tell!)

The newspaper report gives a bit of a skewed idea of the location. His body was found in Surprise Creek Falls which is adjacent to the popular tourist spot at the Barron River Power Station (seen in the picture). Surprise Creek above the falls is a bit of a favourite local walk-in swimming hole less than a half hour walk from Kuranda. Chances are he was swimming or filling a bottle and got too close to the edge and slipped. The rough and difficult terrain probably refers to having to abseil halfway down a large waterfall. The walking track to the creek at the top of the falls is an easy and pleasant stroll and not at all a serious or dangerous undertaking.

While hiking in Spain we were told against taking a mountain pass because of the snow and one guy decided to ignore this had a fall and died out there a week later we were walking through a town and a lady was struck by a car. People die everyday and no amount of bubble wrap will save you.
