How long does it take to fall out of shape?
Not long. I'm about to get a very rude shock heading back into the mountains this summer.
I have a personal problem with comfort eating when I'm trying to manage depression and PTSD relapse so my fitness decline is accelerated when I'm forced off my feet.
After 6 months not being able to walk 200m without pain I am noticing that I'm starting to feel every one of my 41 years. Cardio, muscle, mind, joints, everything needs re-training. My cardio dropped within weeks of stopping and muscle within a month, joints started seizing up within a week and I'm not a flexible person to start with. My brain is ready but I will need to be very aware of my mental stamina when I need to climb over a few pain barriers. Thankfully my physical stamina is still okay, not great, but needs work.
I think the secret will be slow and steady. Start off with short day walks with a day pack and work up. I have allowed extra week
s on the AAWT so i can take it easy, especially that first incline
(Good news is that I have had surgery and almost fully recovered from that, get the all clear next week. Champing at the bit!)
