Steve's diary records a long, hard walk through untracked country by an Aboriginal Tasmanian at the middle of his life. It's a meditation upon the bush, the past and one human being's need for peace and space. Intercut through it is a conversation recorded at home with his wife, Allison.
Steve Stanton can be a hard man; it was how he was raised. As a child, he found himself walking alone into the bush in order to escape a violent father. As he grew older a subtle transition occurred; he began walking into the bush not to escape, but to connect.
The country Steve heads into on this trip is not his tribal country - at least not as far as he knows - but it's the place where he feels most comfortable. On the wild west coast of Tasmania, where there are no tracks and it's easy to go weeks without seeing another person, he says he feels welcomed by country.
It had been several years since Steve last walked to his special place... but with his 55th birthday approaching he felt the need to return. His wife, Allison, persuaded him to record his journey.
