The best day walk in Australia

Postby vicrev » Sun 17 May, 2015 8:20 pm

Just noticed an article in the Sunday Herald Sun,Escape supplement, written by Mark Daffey...quote "The hike up Lord Howe Island's Mt Gower has been described as the best day walk in Australia. If it isn't,it''s not far off it " unquote........Do you agree with him,or,are there better one's,as far as you are concerned ????.........just wondering :D

The best one is whichever I have just done....

Any time out in the bush is great.

Mt Barney in SEQ the other day, brilliant.

A highly subjective question. But for a sensational title to an article, they need to pick one, along with some nice pics to convince.
Just move it!

Absolutely too subjective to be worthy of debate. For example one mans (Kanangra) day walk is another mans (me) over nighter.

Artimore Station ruins to Mt Patawarta summit in the Flinders ranges near Blinman.

There's definitely a lot of debate over this as I'm sure everyone has a different opinion. The best day walk I have done however is Mt Anne. It was my first walk and introduction into SW Tas and it blew my mind with its beauty.

Mt Gower is incredible on a clear day. Couldn't say if it's 'the best' but certainly near the top of my list.

Totally agree.

But I would vote Mt Anne as well :)

But being the big peak in the middle of the ocean, it is more often than not covered with cloud. That said, it is still a good walk - great views along the cliffs of the Lower Road, some fun scrambling up to the peak.

I think for me the Castle (Budawangs) would be my pick in NSW, but the (easy) exposed scrambling is not everyone's cup of tea.

Here is another vote for Mt Gower!

And the best easy climbing day out is the West Wall of the Three Sisters, sadly now off limits.
And the best easy XC ski trip is across to Kosci from Thredbo on a blue sky day.
And the best easy canyon day is Sheep Dip/Rocky Ck.
(Although Mt Anne or Frenchmans or Federation or Cradle are all in contention)
And the best whitewater day perhaps somewhere on the Franklin, the Irenabyss or great Ravine.

That should stir things along a bit.
Best wishes
John

As someone said, too subjective to debate. Cathedral Range's southern circuit is absolutely my favourite day walk in Australia, followed closely by the Kings Canyon rim. That's probably as much because of what those places mean to me personally as anything else though.

Subject for debate - what's a 'daywalk'? Hubby happily churns out 45-50 km, I'm whining after 23/24 km.
And Neil, having just visited King's Canyon last month, yes it's a great trip.
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

That's a good point haha... My definition is broad. I have no intentions of doing anything over 30km in a day (not for pleasure, anyway). I'd consider it a day walk if it was 4 hours of walking and two hours drive each way, though.

Funny, I had some friends who did Kings Canyon (I never did it) and when they walked the big loop at Mutawintji NP with me (a couple of hours from Broken Hill) they prefered that one. Of course not many Aussies see Mutawintji.
