Hiking to Bluff Hut

Postby Wattas111 » Sun 21 Jun, 2015 10:22 pm

Looking at hiking up to Bluff hut in the next couple of weeks. As far as I'm aware you can drive up to within 2kms from the hut. The plan would be to stay in the hut over night and then come out the next day. Neither of us have done much snow hiking before so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

At this time of the year you want to be very careful taking any vehicle - even a 4wd - along the Bluff Track from 8 Mile Gap. It's a narrow road with one or two awkward bits & collects a lot of snow, ice and treefalls. Doable but you have to know what you're doing. j
Were you planing on walking up the road from the gate, or taking the walking track from near Refrigerator Gap?
The Bluff walking track is good fun but you have to be careful with the climb in winter as it gets very icy on the steeper sections. Make very careful note of where you hit the edge of the scarp, because if there's fresh snow it could be hard to find on the descent. Snow shoes or crampons wouldn't be a bad idea for the traverse along the top. Great place for a walk in winter.
