Hey guys im going on a trip to India on the 23rd and I need travel insurance for around $5000, im going for a month and only staying in India. Any suggestions for cheap companies that honour claims?

I've been sending people to Nomads for a long time, haven't heard of any claims but theyre one of the big players and cheap (at least back when we researched various companies)

i have used travelinsurancedirect.com.au about half a dozen times and claimed with them twice. i completely recommend them. they are well priced too.

Hey guys, the trip im doing is with my school and covers all medical and liability stuff etc all i need is personel effects/ luggage cover for around $5000, is anyone cheaper?

I have used travel insurance direct and claimed several times so I can highly recommend them as being reliable.

International insurance without medical and liability??? probably isn't going to be any to find since about 80% the reason for international travel insurance is to cover medical, so you don't get reamed when something bad happens.

Surely if your school has covered medical and liability then they should be able to point you in the right direction?
Why would you want to take $5k worth of luggage to India?

Its all my hiking gear etc, some of its pretty valuable, im there for a month, I have cameras etc, its probably not worth $5000 but thats the minimum with most companys, better safe than sorry, ill just pay the extra for one of these guys =) Thanks guys for the help!

travel insurance direct would be about $115 for 1mo in india. that includes $12k of personal effects coverage. i don't reckon you'd find much cheaper than that!!

$120 buck is much to pay - if your worried about your possessions.

Personally speaking - taking expensive hiking gear and camera to India could be waving a red rag to a bull...
Not that you shouldn't do it, just be aware walking around with flashy expensive gear is like asking for some swift fingers to help themselves.

Probably worth getting familiar with your responsibility in the case that something happens and you have to make a claim i.e. -read the policy.
Which means photograph luggage etc, before you leave. Make sure you have receipts and serial numbers etc.
Having been through the troubles caused when my wife was pick pocketed in South America... hours at the police station - getting a police report - translating it to English, $150 of international roaming to cancel credit cards etc. Filing the claim... etc.
Its not fun and best avoided in the first place... and if you don't do the right thing insurance won't pay up.

Cheers Azza, some good points, I wont be in the city much but I know what you mean, I already thought of "photoing" the gear as my leader person (im in highschool and its a school trip) has been a few times and told me that one.

It is probably a bit late, but household contents policies sometimes cover your possessions around the world.

I'm just changing over to a Ausbrokers* policy with CGU which does this. I did it because I will be travelling a lot next year with a laptop and camera, items totalling more than $2000.

This is the problem. Travel insurance policies will not cover anything left in a car overnight, or in the cabin of a car in daytime. They will cover things left in the boot in daytime, but only to a value of $2000. It is not possible to increase this limit.

So now my contents policy will cover what the travel insurance does not cover.

And incidentally, it will also cover my gear on any trip I do in Australia. Imagine losing your pack over a cliff with tent, stove, sleeping bag, etc. Could be several thousand dollars.

* Ausbrokers is a group of insurance brokers.

Bit late, but, check out who you bank with.
If I pay my travel tickets thro Wstpk plastic, travel insurance and med evac is covered. I'd be surprised if the other major banks didnt equal.
And for extras, say your extended camera kit and specific expensive items, speak to your household contents insurer, as David pointed out.
