The end of the year approaching I'm getting excited about my planned trip to Oz in the next!
A thought has been on my mind and I wonder if you guys have views please. I'll be flying over from England and ideally want to bring as much of my own gear as possible. If I hire gear I won't be familiar with it - especially something like a tent which I won't know how to put up! I'm investing in some new Ferrino kit and would like to bring as much of it as I can but of course there are restrictions on weight etc!
Has anyone ever taken a tent on a plane?! Also I guess things like knives are ok if stashed in cases in the hold. I guess gas bottles are out too?

Basically you can bring everything except food and fuel . Knives, scissors, hiking poles, tent poles must be in checked luggage. Cigarette lighter must be with you - not in checked luggage. Ensure all your gear is clean, especially your hiking poles (tips especially), tent pegs, soles of boots, base of rucksack etc. We have quite stringent quarantine rules as we do not have many livestock and plant diseases prevalent in the rest of the world.

Also, most food products are on the Quarantine list both ways.

There are restrictions bringing a lot of food products into Australia from the EC and from Australia into the EC. You might get away with small quantities, but don't bet on it. best to buy local and avoid potential problems.

Not only clean, dry as well.

I can't really figure out the rules on what food you can bring in. It's not spelled out clearly anywhere that I've found. Each time we've brought stuff, including some home dehydrated food, and it was deemed okay. Next time we'll bring more, declare it of course, and see what they say. Worst case is they take it.
