Gordonvale - for sale!

Postby myrtlegirl » Thu 19 Jan, 2012 8:48 am

Some interesting land is coming up for sale, around 18,000ha of wilderness.

If you've ever looked at maps around the Gordon River / Lake Rhona area, you will have seen that there is a patch of private land incongruously located in the middle of nowhere called Gordonvale, which used to be owned and used by Ernie Bond in the 1930s. This property is one of those now for sale!

http://www.themercury.com.au/article/20 ... -news.html

I've got some info on Ernie that I'll dig up and post here.

There are also bunch of huge tracts of land around the great lake and further west. All credit to the old fella, conservation is only certain until inheritance eh.
Its a shame it takes covenants to protect areas, especially any on (more than marginal) farm land.

I was just reading about Ernie Bond in "Trampled Wilderness" and found something quite interesting quote
" ....... where he died, having made Gordon Vale, in his will, a gift to the bushwalkers of Tasmania."
So does that mean we already own it ?

Yes when Ernie Bond died, he left the property to the HWC and LWC to operate as a hostel. There are some details in this thread in scans of articles I uploaded from LWC magazines. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6252&p=82579
I don't know the story of what happened to the property that ownership was relinquished. It wold be interesting to know this story and their should be many "old" bushwalkers still around that could provide this information. It seems like an opportunity missed by the bushwalkers of Tasmania :-(

Craggy peaks Campbell, going to play some golf? Come over to German Town, Just down the road from Craggy( maybe a little bit more).
My patrol area doesnt quite make it that far( thankfully - dont want to have anything to do with Rossarden). I stop at Mangana. Be careful if you go to the Rossarden club for a quiet beer.

On a sadder note, the photo used in the Gordonvale promotion above was taken by LWC Foundation member and past President, Norm Hoyle, who died last Sunday in Deloraine, and whose funeral I attended yesterday.

Hi guys,

Sorry for infiltrating your forum but I thought you'd all like to know that we (the Tasmanian Land Conservancy) were successful in securing Gordonvale as TLC's twelfth permanent reserve. This was made possible in no small part thanks to the many, many people from both Tassie and interstate who supported the campaign.

We're celebrating Gordonvale next Friday in Hobart if anyone's interested in joining a great bunch of people (yeah, ok... I'm biased) for an evening of merriment. You can register and find out more info here - http://bit.ly/17OCKoP - but the basics are:

6.30pm Friday 27 September at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart

Thanks for the stories and photos you shared of Gordonvale on these message boards, they were great to see and read and really drove home how significant Gordonvale was to many in the bushwalking community. :)

Cheers,

Anita from the Tasmanian Land Conservancy

That's great news, but I'm wondering who it was bought from? If it was left either to the walking clubs or the bushwalkers of Tasmania, who ended up owning it and selling it?

It was my pleasure to be able to tell you tas-man, I hope you and many others are in a position to be able to join us next Friday in Hobart... the stories that have surfaced throughout this campaign have been absolutely amazing, many of which I've read on these boards, so I'm sure the 120 guests we have registered so far will have many more to share on the night! Was it you who posted the unearthed Gordonvale shots on Launceston Walking Club's Facebook page a few days ago tas-man??

I'm unaware of how or why the property left Hobart and Launceston Walking Club's hands Taurë-rana, but there will be a few old members from both clubs coming to the celebration next Friday. Might be a good opportunity to come and find out?! Roger Nutting, president of the Mountain Hut Preservation Society and Gordonvale enthusiast, is going to be there and plans on bringing a bunch of Gordonvale memorabilia with him. :)
