Discussion about making bushwalking-related equipment.

This is version two of our home-made bushwalker's pantry. It's a neat way of keeping your food together/organised. It now has see-through pouches which make it easier to see what you've got. It also makes it fractionally lighter. The basic material is a cheap version of parachute silk (?polyester?), the kind of stuff you use to make kites, banners etc.
My resident seamstress and bushwalking companion (aka my wife) made this one for herself. Her earlier version (mine) appeared here

Looking good...nice and orderly!
I can see 4 little velcro tabs that come together....Is this sufficient velcro to hold it shut when the pouches are fully loaded? I understand it's also rolled up.
Does it collapse and roll up nicely even when there is little food or items in the pouches?
Great stuff. Looks neater than my pantry!

Looks good!
I wonder if it would pack smaller if the pouches were offset - top row starting with a half size (widthwise) pouch on the left so the bulging pouch nestled into the stitched down edge of the opposite bottom row pouch. This would require the bottom row to have a half pouch on the right. It would hold the same or more, and could be more efficient in space utilisation.
If I had an e-sketch pad handy I'd draw what I mean, but its been a long day and the glass needs refilling

What you say makes perfect sense!

Hi quicky - yes, the velcro does the job. And when the pantry is empty, it rolls up to almost nothing.
And thanks Gaye. I ran your offset pocket suggestion by the designer, and she thought that was a good idea.
Oh and finally, the main material is rip-stop nylon.
cheers

I only travel with one other person. so I use 3 home made roll top bags, labelled 1,2 and 3, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Very easy.

That looks great. I might try and make something similar. In fact, I might try and make something similar for work-related items when I do consultation work out in the field.
