Discussion about making bushwalking-related equipment.
Fri 15 Nov, 2019 8:51 am
Hi,
Been getting into the MYOG thing and I am going to start selling some bits and bobs.
Anyone been doing that?
Listing on this site, should it be in Market Square or in the Specials/Adverts category (I'm guessing the (specials/adverts)?
Anyone sold on eBay? The fees are quite high.
Starting out selling X-Pac mini wallets, DCF zip pouches etc.
Any hints or tips would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Pete

So is this stuff waterproof or seam-sealed? Not sure what you are aiming at here.

I love this, at first you wanted the ultralight cottage manufacturer gear... Now you ARE a ultralight cottage manufacturer!!
That gear looks good too, nice job. I hope you sell some

Thanks!
I'm really loving the sewing. I can see myself doing quite a bit of it.
Plan is to make and sell some stuff and invest the funds back into more fabrics and bits.

Nicely made. I wish you the best with it all.

If you plan on doing it seriously, setup a facebook / insta page, share some photos of your gear and advertise some prices, or go the whole way and setup a cheap website - blog with plugin shopping cart software etc.
People love comparing specs, weights, prices etc so give them something to browse.
Feel free to offer some small lengths of MYOG fabrics too, they're hard for many to get in small quantities if you're ordering in bulk to Aus

Good luck !

CasualNerd,
Very early days yet. Once I have made up some more stuff I'll post it here, probably in market square or adverts.
I'll also post materials used, construction techniques, weight and price.
I'm currently buying the fabric in 1/2 yard lots so won't be on selling it any time soon. The only way to get it cheaper is to buy it by the roll and then only for savings of 20 - 25%. A 40m roll of 1.43oz DCF costs $1600 before shipping and duty/GST....ouch

Hi Greg, the DCF pouches are sewn and seam taped so quite water resistant. DCF is 100% waterproof.
The zips are only water resistant, good for rain, bad to submerge.
The wallets are made from waterproof fabric but not seam taped or sealed.
This kind of gear is popular in the US and Europe, good for ultralight backpacking where the packs are relatively featureless (few, if any pockets). This kind of gear is for lightweight organisation of all the little bits n bobs.
