Rayway Tarp kit - yay or nay?

Postby headwerkn » Tue 28 Jan, 2014 11:04 am

Hi all,

I'm keen to get a basic, lightweight flat tarp to use as a secondary shelter, basically so we can get out of wind/rain/snow when cooking, etc. And perhaps to experiment with using one as a primary shelter for myself sometime in the future.

A fancy HMG cuben fibre tarp would be lovely of course but far too expensive to justify at this point in time, and as most 'made' silnylon ones are on the wrong side of $200, so I'm instead considering the RayWay kit and leaving off the 'beaks' so I can form a closed-back, pyramid-style shape with a hike pole or branch, etc. DIYing one isn't a concern; I'm pretty decent with a needle and thread and my other half drives her ancient Singer like a pro.

At US$75+shipping the kit seems decently priced and a bit more foolproof than trying to source everything myself and make it work from scratch. That, and if I end up tarping on my own solo trips, being able to add a NetKit and Batwing has appeal.

Or would I be better sourcing an 8'x8' square of silnylon and just sewing in eyelets?

Or is there another premade option that doesn't cost a small fortune?

Cheers, Ben.

If you go DIY.....theres everything you need from http://www.tiergear.com.au/11/diy-supplies-other-gear/2-Ground-Camping/

Heres a couple of patterns with instructions..http://diygearsupply.com/diy-guides/tarps/ theres a cat cut hex or a winter tarp with doors.

You can have more flexibility if you do a hex tarp with beaks.....https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11785

Go on, you can do it !
