G'day all - andrewbish and Phillipsart, among others, have posted about home-made pot cosies before. They pointed to http://blackwoodspress.com/blog/6582/ultralight-backpacking-pot-cozy/, which I found very helpful.

On the weekend my ever-inventive wife tweaked the pattern a little by using her sewing machine to modify and stitch a $3 K-Mart sunshade, and turn it into a pot cosy. We used the existing trim for the top of the main chamber (for neatness of finish). And we used gaffer tape rather than duct tape, just for its greater stickiness. Will let you know if it doesn't work as well Anyway here are the photos.

Hi, I like the stitching work. Wish there was a way to stitch the rest, instead of using tape. I also taped on the inside of mine on the joints, as I read reports that the heat from the pots can melt the plastic on the bubbles in the Car shade material you used.

Yeah - the stitching is good, and I did like the green But I preferred the "aesthetic" of your matching silver tape, Phillipsart ... My gaffer looks plug ugly!

I guess we'll see about the melting. I don't suppose they make car shades out of food-grade plastic ... let's hope we're not poisoning ourselves

made one of these and took it with me overnight recently. It did a great job of extra cooking and keeping the food warm.

A quick report on two aspects of my new home-made pot cosy.

Firstly it worked a treat on our recent Hobart Show Day walk. It was especially good at finishing off cooking a pot of rice, using the absorption method. It was also good at keeping our re-constituted and heated dehydrated food cooking (without using fuel) while we prepared other stuff. It's light and easy to stash - so thumbs up!

But secondly it doubles as a very fetching fez-like hat, as you can see in the attached photo. Double thumbs up!!

Great idea. I'm going to give it a go! To save fuel (meths) I once placed my wool beanie over my billy of rice after 5mins of boiling and left it for another 8mins to finish absorbing the water; worked a treat and I got another boil for a cup of tea.
