FS SYD NSW - Tarptent Squall 2

Postby Dale » Mon 03 Oct, 2011 2:21 pm

Due to my Tarptent family becoming too large I'm saying goodbye to the Squall 2, which has been replaced by the Double Rainbow. The Squall 2 has about 10 nights under its belt and is a single wall Silnylon two person shelter. The tent can be pitched with either trekking poles or pre - supplied poles. It sleeps two adults no problems or could be a large one person shelter.

Specs:
Weight: 940g (add 120g for poles if you don't use trekking poles)
Floor Width: 157cm
Floor Length: 213cm
Area: 2.8 squ meters
Height: 111cm

http://www.tarptent.com/squall2.html#overview

Included is 4 easton stakes, one loop pole and two front poles and stuff sack.

Tent has been seam sealed by me so not the pretty job that Franco would do :D But it has been effective. For my first few trips with this tent it rained incessantly and there were no leaks.

The tent is in great condition - the stuff sack has some minor holes from passing branches but the tent itself is fine with some dirt marks on the floor.

Price is $160 shipped to anywhere in Australia.

I haven't used a single wall tent and at the risk of sounding a dag, well, don't you get wet when you touch the sides?
We'll get fit on the way.

Hi Juju

Some dampness is a possibility ! I was also a bit concerned before taking the plunge on single wall shelters but I haven't had any major condensation issues (and this is the area where single wall tents cop a lot of criticism). I started using this tent last year when it was raining every other weekend, so I have a lot of experience with wetness as well as my main tent -Tarptent sublite which is a single person, single wall shelter. I don't thrash about too much in my sleep so don't knock the walls too much, and when I have (due to camping on slopes) I haven't had any major puddles in the tent :D Being a two person shelter the Squall 2 gives you extra room to stay away from the tent walls... The trick with the silnylon shelters is to get a taut pitch - I've found this more than anything helps to keep the rain out.

I'm not sure if the photos show it well enough, but there is excellent ventilation with this shelter, you can unclip the front and there is the Tarptent trademark 360 mesh which helps with airflow.

Also providing your sleeping bag has a decent DWR coating (most seem to these days) then you've got some room for error if there is some condensation.

Cheers

Dale.

The Rainbow 2 looks sweet. Thanks for introducing me to this brand. What other tarp/tarptents have you tried and would recommend?

Hi Iceman

I've only used the Tarptents so far. I'm too much of a wimp to go just tarps in the Australian Bush with our friendly crawly things roaming around and making life interesting... I switched to the Double Rainbow as I like the side entry and have really enjoyed using the tent. I'm taking it on a packraft trip this weekend as it's a nice weight saving for two people and it has great ventilation options for the warmer weather. I also have the fabric inner which helps with condensation, although I won't bother taking it in warmer weather.

I also have the Sublite Sil and the Scarp 1. The new Tarptent Stratospire looks pretty cool - great room for the weight ! However I think I've maxed out my tents for a while and will have to control my trigger finger and stop ordering gear. The meetings are helping

What conditions will you use your tent in Iceman ?

Cheers

It would only be for walking trips in Oz incl Tas so nothing fancy but just want to cut the weight down. Save the tents for base camps and mountains.

Was going to give the tarps a real bash but I've decided I really need the bug mesh as I'm too much of an insect attractant!

Then you've got a pretty wide choice from the Tarptent range. You just need to figure out whether you want solo or not and the style of tent you prefer. Have fun with it !

$140 that's about half the price of a new one when you include shipping. PM me if you want it and we can work out details.
