(WTB) Optimus 111T or C

Fri 04 Sep, 2015 4:22 pm

Hi everyone,
I'm missing my old Optimus which was confiscated at Sydney Airport a couple of years back now.

So here is your opportunity to off load that heavy smelly old Optimus of yours should you be able to tear yourself into the new century.

I require the silent burner and not any of the roarer models/versions.
I can't stand the noise.

Cheers
Aidan

I still love and frequently use my Optimus Svea 123R.
It's heavy and noisy but has been running faultlessly for over 20 years. Not much modern kit can outdo that.
However, the Shellite fumes have started giving me headaches so I updated to a much more modern Trangia. :)
I'm growing to like the peace and quiet at meal times even if it is a bit slower.

Hi Highercountry, I think the Svea is a great bit of kit.
Its only its noise that stops it being a contender.

I love my Trangia's KISS ethos, but to be honest, its not its boiling speed that frustrates but its soot.
I'm over it!
The boil speed really isn't that far behind and I love that I'm only aware of it once my kettle starts boiling and I can hear the bubbling.

The racket of my Primus Omnilite simply ruins the ambiance for me and for the amount of meths it takes to prime, I could boil enough water for a "mug" of tea.

I can put up with my Trangias flame being a tad too high and burns my kettles rubber handle grip and the knob on the lid, unless I'm prepared to muck about with the adjustable burner lid/top.

Its the filth of the soot that getting on my nerves and no, adding water to the meths by 10% doesn't seem to have helped.
I'm not sure what they add to the meth's these days but it doesn't smell the same and nor does it seem to burn as clean.
A while ago I came across some meths in an old glass bottle and a whiff (smell) took me back to my youth in the dental nurses surgery.
The stuff today smells nothing like it.
